Abstract
Population aging in Iran has transformed into a serious social and economic challenge due to rising life expectancy, an increasing ratio of elderly individuals, declining intergenerational support, and the structural shift of families toward smaller households. The consequences of this trend include a rise in the number of solitary elderly individuals, the proliferation of chronic diseases imposing heavy costs on the health system, the aggravation of the pension fund crisis driven by longer periods of retirement support, and a diminishing capacity for informal family caregiving. Furthermore, the geographical heterogeneity of aging indicates that policymaking must be regional and tailored to the demographic characteristics of each province. Within this framework, "active aging" emerges as a key strategy to enhance the quality of life for older adults, emphasizing health, participation, and security during retirement. Developing lifelong and interdisciplinary education for the elderly can effectively reduce isolation and loneliness, strengthen intergenerational cohesion, enrich retirement leisure, promote a healthy lifestyle, increase independence and self-esteem, counter ageism, and empower older adults to manage legal, psychological, and social issues. The realization of this approach requires precise needs assessment across diverse elderly groups, the design of appropriate educational content, pilot implementation and impact evaluation, the formulation of a sustainable economic model, coordination among executive bodies, and the strengthening of intermediary institutions and non-governmental organizations in supporting older adults.
