Abstract
The increase in life expectancy and the changing age structure of the population have made aging a central issue of welfare and health in Iran, with physical activity emerging as one of the most effective tools for slowing down aging and enhancing the quality of life for elderly women. Evidence indicates that regular exercise improves cardiovascular function, enhances sleep quality, increases relaxation, and prevents common age-related diseases. Psychosocially, it is associated with reduced depression, increased life satisfaction, strengthened social relationships, and the preservation of vitality during retirement. Nevertheless, the development of elderly sports faces institutional and structural barriers, including sports organizations' underemphasis on public sports relative to championship sports, a lack of applied knowledge in elderly education and rehabilitation, the absence of appropriate equipment and facilities, expensive sports services for low-income seniors, age and gender discrimination in the allocation of facilities, a lack of public awareness regarding the benefits of exercise, and issues of loneliness and a lack of companions for participating in physical activities. Proposed strategies emphasize shifting managers' motivational systems from medal-gathering to general health promotion, providing specialized infrastructure for senior sports, training specialized elderly coaches in universities and educational centers, promoting senior sports through the media, organizing sporting events and establishing senior and tourism clubs, and designing affordable or free sports services supported by tax and subsidy incentives.
