Abstract
Corruption, from the perspective of the Quran and the traditions of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), is a concept extending beyond legal violations and the infringement of public rights, interpreted as "ruin" (tabahi) and departure from the path of reform and moderation in moral, political, economic, and cultural spheres—such that the axis of moderation in this outlook is monotheism, and straying from it is considered the origin of the tendency toward corruption. Within this framework, corruption is a complex, hidden, and multidimensional phenomenon possessing both individual and social dimensions, though its most prominent manifestations appear in the social arena. Common causes giving rise to corruption include following carnal desires, unlawful and doubtful sustenance, unemployment, cultural transformation, affluence/luxury-seeking, poverty, and destitution, the consequences of which can range from increased crime and the erosion of moral and material capitals to the weakening of social and political cohesion. At the policy level, proposed strategies emphasize prioritizing prevention over treatment, expanding religious knowledge and insight, reinforcing theoretical and skill-based training, supporting the foundation of the family, institutionalizing enjoining good and forbidding evil, executing divine limits and decisive, fair confrontation with corruption networks, identifying and prioritizing corruptions, institutional coordination among responsible organizations, and the accountability and probity of managers to enhance public trust.
